Embed Innovation in Your Culture - how to get started

Today’s organizations have to innovate in order to increase their ability to not only survive but thrive in today’s digital age. How does a company imbed innovation in its culture?

The first reality check: it will take time, culture is built over time and is highly dependent on the leaders of the organizations.

Here are some ideas on how to get started:

  1. Invite the sharing of ideas - especially from those closest to your customers, recognize those who contributed

  2. Review and discuss the ideas collaboratively - use this to engage as many stakeholders as possible, commit sufficient time to this, recognize those who participate in the process

  3. Invest some time and effort in pursuing the top 1-3 ideas - offer support to a small, self-managed team to research, try, discover and report back to the group

  4. Communicate the outcome - share the story, the successes and even the failures, use this to build lessons learned

This approach is aimed at accomplishing 3 things:

  1. Pro-Actively invite new ideas - demonstrate that you are not waiting from problems to occur before investing time and effort to find solutions (innovative mindset)

  2. Employee engagement - how rewarding is it to know that your organization wants to hear what you think! what you have have to bring to the table (employees’ ideas are valued)

  3. Knowledge building - a full cycle of this will lead to some new ideas that get implemented but also more knowledge gained from the organization overall - about what worked and why and also about what did not work an why (learning culture)

By embedding this approach in many areas of your organization, you will gradually and consistently start to build a culture of innovation as part of your digital transformation.
